Read ITS’ article, Understanding and improving your remote internet connectivity? It breaks down the fundamentals, including:
-have you run a speed test?
-can you connect to the WiFi access point/Internet router with an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi?
-if you are on WiFi, are there more than two walls, or one floor, between you and the WiFi router?
-can the WiFi router be more centrally located?
-can you work closer to the WiFi router?
Here are some more ideas:
-Have you used a free WiFi Analyzer app to measure where WiFi is strongest where you are?
-Is the internet service provider (ISP) you’re using offering free temporary speed upgrades?
-Does the ISP you’re using have a troubleshooting tool for your account with them?
-This isn’t always possible, but can you negotiate a time with others accessing the same bandwidth when each of you needs to do more bandwidth-intensive things?
-Are you trying to watch something from a service that uses adaptive streaming? Kanopy explains how their adaptive streaming works in this article, and also asks,
-Have you cleared your browser cache?
-Have you restarted your computer?
-How do your best speed test results compare with what Zoom needs for various features of a videoconference, as explained in this article? (The minimum numbers are described as “high quality video.”)
-If none of these things sufficiently improve your Internet connection better, please reach out to the ITS Helpdesk.
