Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and bibliographies

Dictionaries and encyclopedias

Use these sources at the beginning of your research to get an overview of a topic or to identify synonyms or related terms that will apply to your topic. Later, return to these sources to clarify concepts or define new vocabulary. These sources also include bibliographical references that may prove helpful. All of these sources are located in the Reference Collection.

Journal indexes

Indexes describe the contents of journals and other publications.  Remember: the indexes listed here are all published by third parties and purchased or subscribed to by the Gould Library.  There is never any guarantee that an item listed in an index is held here at Carleton.  If you'd like to use an item which we do not own, place an interlibrary loan request and we'll find it for you, usually within two weeks.  A complete list of indexes and databases to which we subscribe is available.

Remember that, in addition to the two major indexes of music literature described below, resources of more general scope may well contain important information.  Consider every angle implied by your research topic and consult a variety of sources.

A current awareness database that indexes scholarly journals in a wide range of fields. Users may sign up for e-mail notification of new article on subjects that you have specified.

Indexes journals on a wide range of subjects. Includes full text of the articles from some journals.

ProQuest Research Library
General database with full text for over 1600 journals.

ProQuest Digital Dissertations
Dissertation abstracts with free full-text available for many dissertations written since 1997.

Arts & Humanities

Arts & Humanities Citation Index
Covers more than 1,140 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals in a broad range of disciplines from 1989-present.  If you are new to citation searching, you might find this primer helpful.

International Index to the Performing Arts
Indexes journals (from 1998-present) on all aspects of the performing arts, including theatreand film. Abstracts are included with all citations.

Music-Specific

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature
Published by the Repertoire International de Litterature Musicale, RILM includes coverage of  historical musicology, ethnomusicology, instruments and voice, dance, and music therapy.
