An examination of the legacy of R.A. Fisher - Part I
In our ongoing quest for racial justice, it is essential to confront the history of racism within the sciences. As part of this effort, you are invited to participate in an examination of the legacy of R.A. Fisher. Arguably one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century, Fisher made foundational contributions to both evolutionary biology and statistics. But his advocacy for the human eugenics movement has raised deep concerns about how his work should be treated in academic discourse.
In a series of two Biology Department seminars, we will review some of Fisher's major scientific contributions and explore his eugenics beliefs in the context of his era. Then the recent struggles of various academic institutions and societies will be examined to see how they have changed their treatment of Fisher's legacy. Finally, seminar participants will consider together a range of options for covering Fisher in courses at Carleton. Our goal would be to make specific recommendations for a way forward.
