Empty Bowls 2022

Professor of Art Kelly Connole started Carleton’s version of the Empty Bowls event when she came to campus in 2004. The Empty Bowls project, founded in 1990, has become a prominent national and international movement with local potters, churches, artist organizations and schools raising funds and awareness to address hunger.

Since its inception in 2005 at Carleton, the project has raised over $91,000 for the Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC) food shelf. This event is co-sponsored by Carleton’s CCCE and Carleton’s Department of Art and Art History.

Empty Bowls is an annual event that raises money for the local food shelf through a shared meal of community donated soup served in handmade bowls.  Everyone is welcome!

How the Carleton Empty Bowls Project works:

  1. Come to the Bald Spot (or Upper Sayles in case of heavy rain) on Friday, May 13th, 2022 anytime between 11:30 and 1:15.
  2. Choose a handmade bowl– made collaboratively by Carleton students in ARTS 230 Throwing classes and ceramics student workers.  There are over 500 beautiful bowls to choose from!
  3. Make a donation ($20 is recommended for 2022 but participants are welcome to choose an amount that is right for them) to the Northfield Community Action Food Shelf.  Venmo, credit cards, and cash are accepted.
  4. Enjoy a community meal of delicious bread and soup donated by generous students, faculty, staff, local bakeries, and friends while getting to know members of your communities.
  5. Keep the bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls and stomachs in the world.Thank you to CCCE, Bon Appetit, Brick Oven Bakery, Great Harvest Bakery, and Art and Art History for the ongoing support of the Empty Bowls Project!
