Matthew Taylor is an associate professor at the School of International Service and director of the Brazil Research Initiative at American University. He is the author or co-editor of five books and a variety of articles on Brazilian politics and development. The most recent are Decadent Developmentalism: The Political Economy of Democratic Brazil (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Brazilian Politics on Trial: Corruption and Reform Under Democracy (Lynne Rienner, 2022), co-authored with Luciano Da Ros.
Taylor has held fellowships at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars and as an Adjunct Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Taylor worked in Brazil for more than a decade, including serving on the faculty of political science at the University of São Paulo from 2006-2011.
Gary Wynia was the William R. Kenan Professor of Latin American Politics and former chair of the Department of Political Science at Carleton College. Widely recognized as one of the world’s top experts on Argentine politics, he was called upon by political leaders, among them former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, as well as academics, for his views of that country’s politics.
Professor Wynia began teaching political science at the University of Minnesota in 1969 shortly after receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin. In 1983, he moved to Carleton, continuing a career in teaching until 1995. He authored several books, among them The Politics of Latin American Development (Cambridge, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1998), the standard text in the field; Argentina in the Post-war Era (New Mexico, 1978); and Argentina: Illusions and Realities (Holmes and Meier, 1986, 1992). He is remembered for his gentle humor, vast knowledge, wisdom and strong leadership.
