Today's Campus Walking Tour is Faced with Change: WWII and Modernization Come To Carleton
Explore how Carleton College’s architecture was shaped by the Great Depression, World War II, and Post-War shifts in the school’s social and institutional identity. This tour will give insight into the financial burdens and specter of war which forced change to Carleton’s architectural plans. Postwar, the Modernist movement in architecture influenced the designs for new buildings. Participants will learn what structures from the mid-century period remain and which have vanished.
The tour is 1.5 hours long, with the last half hour being spent in the exhibition itself (this portion of the tour is optional if you’re pressed for time). Departure point is The Laurence McKinley Gould Library. Please arrive promptly. Thank you and we look forward to taking you on a tour of campus!
