How to Design Chemistry for Climate Impact without First Overhauling our Global Economic System
Cody Finke (‘12), CEO & Co-Founder, Brimstone Energy
If we want to use chemistry to mitigate the impacts of climate change, we have two broad options: 1) go into policy and try to change a global system such that we are disincentivized to pollute with GHG emissions or, 2) try to develop chemical processes or widgets which use economic levers to eliminate greenhouse gases from the equation while still proceeding basically as we all do as humans in the global economic system today. I will use my company as an example of how I think about designing a technology for impact and what the road from PhD to startup founder/CEO is like. My seminar will include talking about how my company Brimstone Energy is working on decarbonising the global cement industry, which is responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (compared to cars which are 6.5%!!).
*This seminar counts towards the chemistry major seminar attendance requirement.
