Ceramics Wood Firing

Wed, May 18, 2022 • 5:00am - 11:00pm (18h) • Carleton Art Yard
Person loading a large wood-fired kiln with pottery

The Carleton Wood Kiln is fired two to three times each year and is a critical part of ceramics education on our campus.  The firing starts with just a single match and a few sticks at 5am and reaches temperatures exceeding 2200 degrees by 10pm that same day.  The approximately 130 artworks inside the kiln are licked by flames and dusted with ash as the Carleton ceramics community shares in the physical work of firing the kiln with just wood from the Arboretum.  The dynamic results from melted ash are a perfect record of the local materials used in the process and are truly the fruits of our labor.  Anyone is welcome to visit the kiln throughout the day to learn more about the firing and the ceramics community.  The kiln is located in the Art Yard just across the street from Farm House.
