Classical Legacies and Modern Challenges: Reimagining Sophocles’ Philoctetes
Connect to Virtual Event

Join us for a one of a kind multidisciplinary event: Professors Andrew Carlson (Theater Department), Cecilia Cozzi (Classics Department) and the Chicago-based modern bard Joe Goodkin come together to share insights about their upcoming project: a brand new Carleton production reimagining the Sophocles’ Philoctetes for modern audiences, both on and off campus. This Greek drama (by the same author of Antigone and Oedipus the King) was staged in Athens in 409, but revolves around themes deeply close to us: from the challenges of the young generation, to the importance of empathy, the exposure to physical pain as well as the effects of social isolation on the psyche.
You are definitely in for a treat: the panel will be punctuated by live performances of Joe Goodkin’s new songs for the show, as well as by dramatic readings under the direction of Andrew Carlson. Do not miss the opportunity to hear more about this production and participate in a bigger conversation on how Classics, music and theater can still shape our lives.
