Dr. Vincent Lloyd Gives Ian Barbour Lecture, "Abuse: A Problem of Religion and Modernity"
Vincent Lloyd is Professor and Director of the Center for Political Theology at Villanova University. A scholar of religion, race, and political thought, he is the author or editor of thirteen books, including Black Dignity: The Struggle Against Domination (Yale University Press), Black Natural Law (Oxford University Press), and the co-edited Political Theology Reimagined: Itineraries, Ruptures, Experiments (forthcoming from Duke University Press). His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Atlantic, Commonweal, Sojourners, and other public-facing venues. From 2012-2024 he co-edited the journal Political Theology, developing the accompanying digital platform of the Political Theology Network, politicaltheology.com. Lloyd has received fellowships and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Luce Foundation, and the American Academy of Religion. He has served in visiting positions at Notre Dame, Emory, Virginia, Durham (UK), and, this year, the University of Wisconsin. Lloyd received his B.A. in Religion from Princeton and his Ph.D. in interdisciplinary humanities from the University of California, Berkeley.
We are excited that he will give this year's Ian Barbour lecture, held in honor of the legacy of Ian Barbour's engagement with the role of religion in the modern world. Professor Barbour, founder of Carleton's Religion department, gave the Gifford Lectures in Scotland and in 1999 was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. Professor Ian Barbour was the Carleton College Winnifred & Atherton Bean Professor of Science, Technology and Society, Emeritus. He passed away December 24, 2013.
