Points, Lines, Angles, and Shapes: Math & Art Symposium
This research event brings together thinkers in the fields of mathematics and art. Presentations will explore artistic traditions including Islamic tiling and tessellation, African architecture and fractals, and Japanese sangaku, which are wooden tablets found in Shinto Shrines and Buddhist temples and are inscribed with mathematical problems.
The conference will begin with a keynote presentation by Francis Su, Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and former president of the Mathematical Association of America. He will speak about his book Mathematics for Human Flourishing (2020), which makes the case that to miss out on mathematics is to live without experiencing some of humanity’s most beautiful ideas.
This event is supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
