Ryan Skinner is Professor of ethnomusicology and Africana studies in the School of Music and the Department of African American and African Studies at The Ohio State University. Dr. Skinner’s research focuses on popular culture, ethics and aesthetics, cultural politics, public piety, intellectual property, and new social movements in Africa and its European diaspora. He is the author of Afro-Sweden: Becoming Black in a Color-Blind Country (University of Minnesota Press, 2022) and Bamako Sounds: The Afropolitan Ethics of Malian Music (Minnesota, 2015). He is also the author and illustrator of children’s book, Sidikiba’s Kora Lesson (Beaver's Pond Press, 2008), and an accomplished kora (21-stringed Mande harp) player.
