Along with land-use change, pollution, and climate change, species invasions are a top driver of global ecosystem change. In forests, invasive insects and pathogens cause short-term losses of ecosystem function, including carbon storage, and long-term changes in species composition, structure, and function. A unique threat posed by invasive insects and pathogens is that they can eliminate an entire tree species, with cascading biodiversity losses. This talk explores the causes and consequences of losing hemlocks and oaks from invasive insects in the Northeastern United States.
