Talk by Chris Saladin
Chris Saladin is a doctoral candidate in History at the University of Minnesota specializing in the ancient Mediterranean world and spatial history. His dissertation maps Roman colonialism in North Africa.
Geospatial analysis is central to his doctoral research, which examines the urban development of the Roman colony at Carthage from the 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. In addition to engaging with surviving Greek and Latin texts, his research relies on the spatial analysis of material evidence. He developed a digital archive of Carthage’s archaeological record to make sense of nearly two centuries worth of excavation reports. Using GIS mapping software, he catalogued, organized, and visualized roughly two hundred unique structures and produced detailed maps depicting seven centuries of continuous settlement. His spatial data is viewable in a digital companion to his dissertation, the Digital Roman Carthage project.
