Seminar: “Sticky feet: "Sea urchin adhesion, plasticity, and climate change”
Mon, March 6, 2023
• 3:30pm
- 4:30pm (1h) • 141 Olin
Carla Narvaez, Assistant Professor of Biology at Rhode Island College will talk about her research on sea urchins.
Sea urchin survival and success as herbivores in intertidal and subtidal communities are largely mediated by their tube feet, which are involved in attachment, locomotion, and feeding. Attachment is achieved by a duo-gland adhesive system that secretes an adhesive to attach to substrata. Tube feet adhesive performance and regeneration abilities are highly plastic in response to changing environmental conditions.
