New to Us: Recent Additions to Gould Library Special Collections
Rare books and artists’ books are housed in Gould Library's Special Collections. These materials are determined to be “rare” and “special” because of their unusual, unique, fragile, and/or historically significant characteristics. While the oldest book in the collection was created around 1300 and the newest was printed this year, each represents a significant record of the human experience. Gould Library cares for these books in a secure, climate controlled environment on the first floor of the library to preserve them for future generations.
Built in an effort to provide representative examples of a wide range of time periods, subject matter, geographic regions, styles of printing, binding, illustration, and format, Special Collections serves to support the college’s curriculum and provide students with opportunities to practice primary source research. By offering hands-on experiences in the Special Collections Classroom, the collection serves as a laboratory for the liberal arts. Here, researchers find opportunities to engage with both the content and the materiality of the book at hand. This is a learning environment in which students are encouraged to approach materials with curiosity and an active spirit of discovery.
The books in this display have all been added to the library’s collection over the last two years. They were chosen by Special Collections Librarian Rebecca Bramlett, often in close consultation and collaboration with faculty members from departments across the college.
All Special Collections materials are available to the community by pre-arranged appointment.
