Working in SciComm - Storytelling and Science in Documentary Production

Mon, November 7, 2022 • 3:30pm - 4:30pm (1h) • 141 Olin
Jay Balamurugan

BBC science documentary researcher Jay Balamurugan will talk about the world of science communication. Science is vital - we know this, but how do we convey that importance to the wider public, and how do we inspire budding scientists to pursue their interests? How do we get people excited to learn, and how do we get them to want to learn more? There is one tremendously powerful way that traces its roots right back to the origin of our species - storytelling. Scientific storytelling conveys complex and otherwise difficult-to-digest concepts and ideas to the public in a way that engages and excites them. In this seminar, we will explore film and television as an avenue in this field, and how to break into science communication as a graduate - which skills are valuable to have, what opportunities are out there, and what the science communication career landscape looks like.
