Football and Baseball
A four-year letter-winner in football and baseball, Hanks helped the Knights capture MIAC crowns in both sports. He was a captain of the 1992 championship football team and two-time captain of the baseball team. Hanks began his football career at running back, scoring four touchdowns in the 1991 homecoming win over Augsburg. He transitioned to tight end for his senior season. The move paid huge dividends for the 1992 Knights, who won their first MIAC title since 1924 and earned the program’s first-ever NCAA playoff berth. An All-MIAC performer at his new position, he led the nation in receptions by a tight end with 63, earning All-America honorable mention. He was second in the conference with 724 receiving yards while pacing the league in receptions. Hanks finished third on Carleton’s all-time list with 122 catches and eighth with 1,473 yards. He found the end zone 22 times overall, including 12 touchdown receptions. He was also honored in 1992 as an Academic All-American and shared the football program’s C.J. Hunt Award his junior year. On the diamond, Hanks was a catcher and outfielder for the 1991 MIAC champions, a team that set the school record with 24 wins and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time. Hanks earned Carleton’s Mel Taube Award in 1992 as a two-sport athlete and received the Kelly Memorial Baseball Award that same year.
