Swimming
Geoffrey Isaacman swam four different events at the NCAA Championships—the 100- and 200-yard butterfly plus the 200- and 400-yard IM—and is the only swimmer in program history to be an All-American in the butterfly, a feat he achieved twice. A quarter century after graduation, he still owns the school record in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.56), making it the oldest individual men’s swimming record at Carleton. He also held the program’s 100-yard butterfly mark (51.65) for 16 seasons and upon graduation ranked second in school history in both the 200 IM and 400 IM. There might be no better showcase of the breadth and depth of his ability in the water than what Isaacman accomplished at the MIAC Championships. For his career, he was named an All-MIAC swimmer a combined 11 times in six different events: the four he swam at nationals plus the 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. He was the MIAC’s 200 butterfly champion in 1992 with a time of 1:54.89. Isaacman was also a very productive swimmer at the national level. As a junior, he earned his first All-America award after finishing seventh in in the 200 butterfly. He also swam the 400 IM at nationals that year, finishing 18th in 4:15.58. Building upon that solid showing, Isaacman did even better as a senior, earning All-America status by finishing fourth in the 200 butterfly in school-record time. He also received All-America honorable mention for his 11th-place finish in the 100 butterfly and competed in the 200 IM, placing 17th overall with a lifetime best time of 1:56.91. A captain during his senior season, he was rightfully awarded the Warnecke Award in recognition of his contributions to the team through leadership, sportsmanship, and scholarship.
Isaacman currently serves as a managing attorney at the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office where he’s spent the past 20 years representing indigent people accused of crimes. In 2004, he was recognized as one of Minnesota Lawyer’s Attorneys of the Year.
He and his wife Susan Herlofsky reside in Minneapolis with their children Samuel and Isabella.
