Basketball and Baseball
Laurie Slocum is a native of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where he lettered in football, was captain of the district championship basketball team and the state championship baseball team.
The fifth of five brothers to enroll at Carleton, Slocum won four letters in basketball and four in baseball, captained both teams, and is probably the only player in modern Midwest Conference annals to be named to the first All-Conference basketball team four consecutive years. He was a three-time All-Conference selection in baseball as a pitcher.
Laurie set three Carleton scoring records: 1,322 points in four years, 1,079 points in three years and 432 points in one year. He and Howard Rosenblum ’55, who was twice named first and twice second-team All-Conference, are generally recognized as the greatest pair of guards in Midwest Conference history, and one of the finest small-college guard combinations in the country.
Slocum signed with the Chicago White Sox following graduation and reported to Waterloo, where he won ten and lost four the remainder of the 1955 season. He retired from baseball that fall.
