A native of Owatonna, Minn., Bill Huyck was raised in Minneapolis. He was graduated from Carleton in 1953, having played both football and baseball. After four years as a Naval aviator, he returned to the College in 1957 to gain his teaching credentials and to work as a part-time assistant in the Athletic Department. In 1958, he joined the staff full-time as an Instructor in Physical Education and track and cross country coach.
At the time of his induction, Huyck had coached at Carleton for 20 years, leading his teams to 12 Midwest Conference cross country championships, 7 indoor track and 3 outdoor track titles. In three consecutive NCAA College Division cross country meets, 1974-76, his teams finished 6th, 4th and 4th. The 1977 Carleton track team placed 10th in the NCAA. Two individual national championships and 12 NCAA All-American citations were earned by members of his teams during those twenty years. An acknowledged expert in the distances and middle distances, Huyck has nonetheless developed a number of outstanding sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
Huyck has held offices in both the NCAA College Division Track and Cross Country Associations, and has taught at national clinics in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. He spent the 1964-65 year as an advisor-coach to the United Arab Republic Athletic Federation under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. In 1973, he coached track and taught track coaches on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
Since his induction, Huyck has coached numerous other teams and individuals to various titles, including the 1980 Men’s Cross Country Team, which won the NCAA National Championship, the only Carleton team to ever win a national title.
