Bob Sullivan  •  Head Football Coach

Head football coach at Carleton from 1979 to 2000, Bob Sullivan retired with 102 wins, more than any Carleton football coach. He took over a struggling program and led the Knights to the 1979 Midwest Conference title game in his first season. When Carleton jumped to the more competitive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in 1983, Sullivan again re-tooled the program and led the Knights to five straight upper division finishes from 1986 to 1990. His banner season came in 1992, when the Sullivan-led Knights captured their first MIAC crown of the modern era. That squad also earned Carleton’s first NCAA Playoff bid and Sullivan was named MIAC Coach of the Year. Sullivan coached seven All-Americans, two MIAC most valuable players, and 62 all-conference players. A 1959 graduate of St. John’s University, Sullivan earned a master’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He taught and coached for 11 years at Hill High School in St. Paul and for nine seasons at Cooper High School in New Hope. He posted 95 wins during his 20 years in the high school ranks and led Hill to a pair of state Catholic league titles and Cooper to consecutive Lake Conference crowns. He is also a member of the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Jim Bradford, ’92  •  Football

A three time All-American football player, Jim Bradford is the most prolific wide receiver ever to step on the gridiron at Carleton. When he graduated, Bradford’s 3,719 receiving yards ranked third all-time at the NCAA Division III level. At the completion of his career, Bradford held MIAC records for receiving yards in a game (285), receiving yards in a season (1,238), yards in a career (3,719), catches in a game (13), catches in a career (214) and touchdown receptions in a season (13). The last number also tied the NCAA Division III record at the time. His 32 touchdown catches still stand as Carleton’s all-time record. Perhpas his best season came during 1990 when he caught 66 balls for 1,064 yards and an astounding 13 touchdowns. He was named All-America first team by three organizations. He is the first and only Carleton receiver to post 1,000-yard receiving seasons. His 196 career points scored is also a school record.

Jeff Scherer, ’92  •  Football, Track & Field

Jeff Scherer is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, male athlete ever at Carleton. He was a four-time All-American sprinter and still holds the 100 and 200-meter outdoor records. He earned the MIAC’s most valuable athlete award in 1992. Scherer was an outstanding football receiver as well, ranking in Carleton’s all-time top five with 119 career catches. He made each reception count, as one out of every five of his catches resulted in a touchdown. Scherer tallied 2,153 career receiving yards with an amazing 26 touchdowns. He holds a career yards-per-catch average of 18.1. He earned All-America honorable mention honors in 1991 with 29 catches for 704 yards and six touchdowns, including a 98-yard touchdown.

Larry Jones, ’62  •  Football, Track & Field

Larry Jones was a two-sport stand-out for the Knights, earning all-conference honors in football and track and field. He earned All-Midwest Conference honors in football in 1960 and 1961. He also kicked extra points for the Knights and averaged more than 20 yards per catch. During the 1961 season he recorded 31 catches for 469 yards and seven touchdowns while converting 15-of-17 extra point attempts. The 57 points was the fifth highest in the Midwest Conference that season. In 1960, Jones caught 22 passes for 458 yards and six touchdowns. he earned the football team’s Lippert Award in 1961 for contributing the most to the Carleton football team. A track and field stand-out as well, Jones’s specialties were the low hurdles, javelin, and long sprints. He earned numerous all-conference honors in track.
