Nels Elde '95 is an evolutionary geneticist and professor at the University of Utah investigating host-pathogen interactions and the evolutionary processes that enable organisms to better attack others or defend themselves. In 2020 he won the MacArthur genius award for his work.
His talk, titled "Evolutionary Infection Biology", will focus on how interactions between infectious microbes and host immune systems can unfold as biological conflicts that promote repeated bouts of genetic diversification. He will discuss the genetic conflicts through the lens of evolution involving viruses of zebrafish and newly discovered genes encoding antiviral functions in squirrel monkeys.
