The department’s faculty is a talented and dedicated group of teachers and researchers who strive to offer a challenging and broad schedule of courses. Our expertise covers the main areas of modern biology: molecular and cell biology, organismic biology, and ecology and evolutionary biology. In addition to the major requirements, many students complete minors in biochemistry or neuroscience.
Many of our students are interested in scientific research, and the faculty and staff work enthusiastically to create research opportunities throughout the year. The department is housed in Hulings Hall, part of a new LEED Platinum certified science complex with excellent laboratory and greenhouse resources. Some of our students receive financial support to engage in summer research in the department. Resources are also available to support students who want to do research at other institutions.
The Biology Department encourages off-campus study and has offered courses including Socio-Ecological Sustainability in Oaxaca, Mexico and Public Health in Washington, D.C.. Courses such as these offer an exciting opportunity to study biology in fresh environments.
