The CiDER REU program at North Dakota State University is for any undergraduate interested in exploring the learning and teaching of STEM at the undergraduate level. Join us for an immersive, 10-week summer research experience. Potential projects are diverse and interdisciplinary. Our program includes on-campus housing, a $7000 stipend, mentoring by some of the best researchers in DBER, and a cohort experience like no other. Cedar Creek Long-Term Ecological Research Site Paid Summer Undergraduate Research Program, Housing Included
19 November 2024If you are looking for a high-impact, paid mentored research experience the Cedar Creek Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, located in East Bethel (45 min. north of the Twin Cities) is recruiting four NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) positions running from ~9 June to ~15 August 2025. Students selected for this program will be paid for 40 hours of work per week and will have access to on-site lodgings. They will work with a team of four ecologists (Dr. Peter Kennedy, Dr. Sasha Wright, Dr. Maowei Liang, and Dr. Jake Grossman) with interests spanning water, air, soils, fungi, plants, forests, and prairies to do novel, mentored research across Cedar Creek’s existing experimental platforms.

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences, this Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers undergraduates in STEM an opportunity to conduct guided research internships in marine science. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns work in a research-intensive atmosphere on a topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography or marine biology/geology/ biogeochemistry. The program includes weekly research seminars, professional development presentations, and field trips to nearby coastal marine systems. The Summer 2025 program will run for 10 weeks from Monday, June 2 to Friday, August 8 (pending funding). Student support includes a $7,200 stipend, free housing, and travel assistance for the 10-week program.

2025 UNOLS-MATE Marine Technical Internship Program (includes room, board, and stipend; application deadline 1/6/25) Outside link
8 November 2024This is an opportunity to work onboard research vessels and be exposed to a wide range of marine technologies, equipment and marine technical professionals. The U.S. Academic Research Fleet of UNOLS-designated research ships will host 1 long-term (approximately 6 months) and 12-14 short-term (2-12 weeks each) marine technical internships in 2025. Departure dates will depend on the schedule of each research cruise. We will first select candidates for internships starting in Winter, Spring, and then in Summer and Fall. Applications will stay on file the entire year until all positions have been filled. The selected interns will work with marine technicians and other crew members on shore and at sea and learn how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment in support of shipboard scientific research. The program will pay a stipend of $600 per week plus airfare, lodging and other approved travel expenses. Interns will work, eat, and sleep aboard the research vessel, and be provided lodging and a meal plan off ship as needed. Internship projects will vary from one hosting organization to another and correspond to the objectives set by each specific cruise mission. Shipboard sleeping arrangements vary vessel to vessel. Previous interns have worked on cruises to support science projects ranging from chemical oceanography to marine biology, seafloor mapping surveys, geological studies, ROV missions, and much more! The MDI Biological Laboratory’s REU program aims to engage students in scientific explorations in the Laboratory’s research focus area, Comparative Regenerative Biology and Aging, while providing them with opportunities to build skills important to successful careers in the biological sciences. Research opportunities focus on uncovering basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying regenerative and aging processes in various animal model systems, including zebrafish, African turquoise killifish, nematodes and axolotls. Students will have access to state-of-the-art research laboratories and core facilities, support staff, and our inspirational coastal setting. Students will join in MDI Biological Laboratory’s active scientific community, which includes other undergraduate research fellows, visiting scientists, graduate students, and postdocs as well as research assistants.

4 November 2024Sanford Research has research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The Sanford Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), which includes tracks funded by an NSF REU grant and an NIH R25 grant, provides summer undergraduate research opportunities in basic and biomedical science. In addition, we take PhD students through affiliated programs at the University of South Dakota (Basic Biomedical Sciences) and South Dakota State University (Biochemistry) to complete their dissertation research in a Sanford Research lab. -
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program (application deadline 1/10/25) Outside link
31 October 2024The Fred Hutch Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:
- Complete an independent research project;
- Attend weekly research seminars;
- Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
- Present their findings at a competitive poster session.
The program will run from Monday, June 16 – Friday, August 15, 2025. An online application for the 2025 SURP is now available on the SURP website.
The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 10, 2025. Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Caltech WAVE Fellows Undergraduate Summer Research Program, Includes Housing and Stipend (applications due 1/10/25) Outside link
31 October 2024The WAVE Fellows program supports Caltech’s commitment to diversity by increasing visibility and accessibility to Caltech’s PhD programs to undergraduates in STEM fields who are seriously considering attending graduate school. WAVE Fellows is a 10-week undergraduate research program that provides robust programming in the areas of academic and professional development.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status. A minimum GPA of 3.4 is required.
Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech’s research areas. The most competitive applicants will have prior research experience.
Support: WAVE Fellows will receive a $6,000 award for the 10-week period, plus campus housing and a dining and travel supplement of ~$1,000.

Washington University in St. Louis ENDURE Summer Research Program, Includes Housing and Stipend (applications due 2/3/25) Outside link
31 October 2024Enhancing Neuroscience Diversity through Undergraduate Research Education Experiences (ENDURE) prepares undergraduates from diverse backgrounds for neuroscience PhD programs. Accepted students are funded for up to two years. The program combines independent research, a rigorous academic and professional development curriculum, and an empowering support system so participants thrive on their path to graduate school and beyond. Benefits include a $7000 stipend per summer, travel to and from the program, housing, eligibility for academic year research stipend ($2000 per semester for up to two academic years) and funds to attend up to two scientific conferences annually.
