The Vance-Chalcraft lab (www.vancechalcraftlab.com/) at East Carolina University is recruiting a PhD. student and a M.S. student interested in biology education research to start in August 2026. The doctoral student would be enrolled in their Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry (IDPBBC) and the M.S. student would be enrolled in their M.S. Biology program.
The students may be associated with a multi-institutional study of the learning outcomes resulting from undergraduate courses incorporating participatory science (i.e., citizen science) projects but could also associate with other research projects. The Vance-Chalcraft lab pursues other questions such as:
1) Does the inclusion of training in teamwork enhance student connectedness and team competencies in course-based undergraduate research experiences?
2) How does involvement in community science enhance social capital and build capacity in communities for environmental problem solving?
Our lab uses a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. We are looking for highly motivated students, curious about the world around them, and interested in maximizing the benefits of science for all people.
These students will be funded through a mix of grant (i.e., research assistantships) and institutional funds (i.e., teaching assistantships). If you are interested, please email the following information to vancechalcrafth@ecu.edu by Feb 10.
– a short summary of your interests
– a c.v./resume or listing of relevant research, outreach, and/or teaching experiences
– your prior educational institutions (after high school), including the degree field, graduation date, and overall gpa from each
