The Costello Lab at the University at Buffalo is recruiting PhD students for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year!
The lab conducts research to identify systemic barriers to student success in undergraduate biology courses and evaluate teaching strategies aimed at reducing those barriers. Current research projects center around evaluating course materials that represent scientists in biology courses, present results that do not align with hypotheses, and address how human biases shape scientific knowledge creation. For more information, check us out at www.costello-lab.com.
The Costello lab is housed in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo (UB) in Buffalo, New York. UB is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is New York’s flagship public university. Buffalo is a great place to live with delicious food (home of the Buffalo wing), outdoor adventure (Niagara Falls is a half hour away), great sports teams (Go Bills!), and nice people (“The City of Good Neighbors”).
Applications are due December 1, 2025 (note: no GRE requirement to apply!). You can apply here: https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/biological-sciences/graduate/overview/admissions.html.
If you are interested in joining the Costello lab, please contact robincos@buffalo.edu before applying so we can discuss your interests and fit with the current research directions of the lab!
I also encourage interested PhD students to apply to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/grfp-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship-program; due November 10th). I am happy to mentor students on their fellowship application.
