Organization for Tropical Studies

18 September 2019

OTS offers programs to immerse students in learning and research that will impact the future of the tropics and sub-tropics. OTS’ base in South Africa is the Skukuza Science Research Initiative in Kruger National Park (KNP). KNP is engaged in extensive long-term research on the effects of fire and herbivory on savanna systems, including management of large herbivores such as elephants and rhinos.

This field-based, experiential learning program includes lectures, skills workshops, and fieldwork designed to guide you through research projects that will help address critical issues including wildlife diseases, poaching pressures, and ecosystem management strategies. At the end of the semester, you will conduct a three-week capstone research project and present your findings. Courses throughout the semester include South African Ecosystems and Diversity, Field Research in Savanna Ecology, Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in South Africa, and South Africa: Special Topics in History.

The deadline to apply for the spring semester is November 1st, 2019, while the deadline to apply for the fall semester is April 1st, 2020. For more information and application instructions please visit their website at
