Biology Opportunities

The Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is excited to offer an 8-week opportunity this summer called the Comprehensive Undergraduate Research Experience in Oncology (CURE). The program welcomes undergraduate rising sophomores and juniors that are interested in exploring careers in biomedical research to participate in a summer experience that provides a background in research in clinical medicine. Summer participants will have a structured didactic series featuring training in the key aspects of clinical research conduct, as well as exposure to different careers in biomedical research. Each student will be paired with a faculty mentor to participate in an active research project.

We are currently accepting applications for the Nebraska Summer Research Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Our 10-week intensive undergraduate Summer Research Program provides a unique chance for students to delve into cutting-edge research within our state-of-the-art facilities while gaining a valuable preview of graduate school life at a Big Ten institution. The majority of our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are generously funded by organizations like the NSF, USDA, or NIFA, ensuring an enriching experience for participants. If you are looking for a high-impact, paid mentored research experience the Cedar Creek Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, located in East Bethel (45 min. north of the Twin Cities) is recruiting four NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) positions running from ~9 June to ~15 August 2025. Students selected for this program will be paid for 40 hours of work per week and will have access to on-site lodgings. They will work with a team of four ecologists (Dr. Peter Kennedy, Dr. Sasha Wright, Dr. Maowei Liang, and Dr. Jake Grossman) with interests spanning water, air, soils, fungi, plants, forests, and prairies to do novel, mentored research across Cedar Creek’s existing experimental platforms.

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences, this Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers undergraduates in STEM an opportunity to conduct guided research internships in marine science. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns work in a research-intensive atmosphere on a topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography or marine biology/geology/ biogeochemistry. The program includes weekly research seminars, professional development presentations, and field trips to nearby coastal marine systems. The Summer 2025 program will run for 10 weeks from Monday, June 2 to Friday, August 8 (pending funding). Student support includes a $7,200 stipend, free housing, and travel assistance for the 10-week program.

The MDI Biological Laboratory’s REU program aims to engage students in scientific explorations in the Laboratory’s research focus area, Comparative Regenerative Biology and Aging, while providing them with opportunities to build skills important to successful careers in the biological sciences. Research opportunities focus on uncovering basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying regenerative and aging processes in various animal model systems, including zebrafish, African turquoise killifish, nematodes and axolotls. Students will have access to state-of-the-art research laboratories and core facilities, support staff, and our inspirational coastal setting. Students will join in MDI Biological Laboratory’s active scientific community, which includes other undergraduate research fellows, visiting scientists, graduate students, and postdocs as well as research assistants.

Sanford Research has research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The Sanford Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), which includes tracks funded by an NSF REU grant and an NIH R25 grant, provides summer undergraduate research opportunities in basic and biomedical science. In addition, we take PhD students through affiliated programs at the University of South Dakota (Basic Biomedical Sciences) and South Dakota State University (Biochemistry) to complete their dissertation research in a Sanford Research lab.
