2022 Lindesmith Lecture featuring Salima Hashmi – “…And Then Came Spring!”

The turbulence of Pakistan’s political history is paralleled by the activism in art, literature and performance. At the forefront have been women poets, artists and activists, who came to represent resistance to the brutal regime of General Zia ul Haq in the 1980’s. Artist, activist and educator Salima Hashmi reflects on the lively and diverse artistic expression of the last three decades marked by dark humor and innovative use of mediums as the multiple concerns of ecology, terrorism, gender and ethnic divides have engaged artists in Pakistan.
