Candidate Talk - Alluring Sinography: Revisiting Imperial Japan and Colonial Taiwan
Please join the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in listening to a Candidate for the Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese position give a talk titled Alluring Sinography: Revisiting Imperial Japan and Colonial Taiwan.
Despite efforts within Japanese studies aimed at presenting a more nuanced perspective on national language consciousness, discussions within colonial studies, particularly regarding Japan's colonial history, usually tend to reinforce the notion of national language consciousness when addressing topics such as imperial violence and ideological indoctrination. This talk aims to address this blind spot in colonial studies by arguing for the inclusion of research on premodern and early modern Japanese writing practices.
