China and Japan are among the most exciting regions in the world, highly advanced economically and socially but also culturally distinctive. Many students without previous Chinese or Japanese experience start their language learning with us at Carleton and develop their skills immensely here. Students with existing proficiency in Chinese or Japanese at various levels also find plenty of opportunities to further enhance their linguistic abilities. In addition to the language courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in Chinese and Japanese, we offer translation courses taught in English to enable a deep dive into Chinese and Japanese cultures. Framed in a broad time span from the ancient to the present, these courses explore various themes on literature, philosophy, films, and popular cultures, such as anime, manga, and digital media.

We support students in pursuing robust Off-Campus Study (OCS) experiences across China and Japan. You can apply for a variety of programs in China or head to Japan through either the Associated Kyoto Program or our Tokyo-based Japan Study program. Studying experiences at these programs will be your gateways to East Asia and its peoples that await you. Our program also functions as a stepping stone for students to make their way into Southeast Asia. Please explore our department website for fellowship resources. After going to an OCS program, many of our students complete a Special Major in Chinese or Japanese (with or without another major), or a Minor in either field. Every year we have alums returning to Asia for their career, or come back to stateside for graduate school. Alums remain connected with the region(s) in various ways.

Both in and outside of the classroom, as a community, we offer ample opportunities for you to practice Chinese and Japanese languages. Our tutors work with you one-on-one to provide individualized feedback. Our Language Associates organize weekly cultural gatherings as well as language tables where faculty have lunch with students. For Japanese language activities at Carleton, please check out our Facebook and Instagram pages. Some Chinese language students start an instrument at Carleton and join Chinese Music Ensemble to perform. We also carry out a variety of holiday celebrations as well as excursions to the Twin Cities, only an hour away, to see a movie, a performance, or art exhibit.
