How is writing in English different from writing in your first language?
My writing in English is much better than my writing in Spanish. My grammar and spelling in Spanish is less professional and fluid when I write in Spanish. I have much more practice writing in English.
What has been your experience with writing at Carleton?
I had a good experience with the writing center. I made an appointment one time over zoom. With the writing center person, we read over my essay and ensured that it was focused. I have never went to the writing center for help writing in Spanish.
What are some of the benefits of being a multilingual writer/thinker?
- Being able to communicate with more people
- Being able to see how English and Spanish are similar/different
- Being more familiar with roots of words
- Knowing phrases and concepts in Spanish that cannot be directly translated to English
What resources have supported your development as a writer?
- I think the library website has been a great source for finding information on how to use certain citation styles
- Grammarly!
- Zotaro
- Honestly, just practicing
- Friends who help proofread! (super helpful)
- My A&I professors
What strategies have professors used to make writing a positive experience for you?
- Making outlines/drafts mandatory
- Peer reviews/edits
- Having office hours!
- Giving a clear structure for how one could go about writing the essay
- Giving us common mistakes students make
What kinds of challenges have you faced as a multilingual writer?
Since Spanish was my first language, I came to English late. This resulted in a weaker vocabulary and trouble with spelling. Throughout high school and college, I have overcome these challenges by reading a lot and putting a lot of effort into my writing. (I still cannot spell well, which is sad.)
What advice would you give faculty to help them support multilingual writers?
Be understanding of grammar errors! There is nothing more discouraging than a prof making the assumption that you didn’t work hard on an essay just because of a few errors.
What else would you like faculty and staff at Carleton to know?
Patience and kindness goes a long way.
