How is writing in English different from writing in your first language?

My choice of words is pretty limited in English. Therefore, I could not convey messages in English as precise as I could in my first language. I might have to add one more sentence to explain something I can use one word in English to explain.

What has been your experience with writing at Carleton?

My writing experience has grown a lot since I came here. It is because of the class structure and Carleton writing resources. In almost every class, there is always at least one writing assignment, even in STEM subjects. When I encounter issues, I always seek help from the faculty and staff from the class and the writing center.

What are some of the benefits of being a multilingual writer/thinker?

I guess this allows me to observe instances from multiple aspects subconsciously.

What resources have supported your development as a writer?

The writing center, especially Melanie and Renata. Office hours (in English Department).

What kinds of challenges have you faced as a multilingual writer?

Ambiguous situations when using rule[s] of grammar. I do not know the words that I don’t know. Therefore, I could not simply google those words. I have to either have read a lot before or find someone to share their choice of words.

What advice would you give faculty to help them support multilingual writers?

  • Having a list of vocab necessary in that content is very helpful.
  • I have taken Intro to Buddhism, and the faculty provided the word bank. It was helpful for me to recheck the definition and what words I can use.

What advice would you give another student from your country who is coming to study in the U.S.?

I would recommend them to utilize Carleton writing resources. Start your assignment early so that you have more time to look at your writing. Also, you can use the writing resources for many types of writing, such as cover letter, resume, and statement of purpose.
