Making Theatre

14 February 2019

Back when I was the producer of an iconoclastic theatre company, we used to say (somewhat defiantly) “We don’t produce plays.  We Make Theatre.”

That spirit lives on in the artists of Pig Iron Theatre Company, who have been working with Carleton students to create “The Heart is the Last Frontier,” a wholly-original theatrical production opening Friday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Theater.

Based in Philadelphia, here’s how Pig Iron characterizes their work:

The mission of Pig Iron Theatre Company is to expand what is possible in performance by creating rigorous and unusual ensemble-devised works; by training the next generation of daring, innovative theatre artists; and by consistently asking the hardest questions, both in our art and in its relation to the world around us.

Founded in 1995 as an interdisciplinary ensemble, Pig Iron Theatre Company is dedicated to the creation of new and exuberant performance works that defy easy categorization.

Under the guidance of Pig Iron Associate Artistic Director Nell Bang-Jensen, an ensemble of Carleton students have been working to devise their own performance, entitled “The Heart is the Last Frontier.” Pig Iron co-founders Dan Rothenberg and Quinn Bauriedel have provided additional injections of Pig Iron technique and spirit at various points in the process.

They’re not producing a play. They are seriously Making Theatre.

“The Heart is the Last Frontier” will have six performances, running though February 23rd. Reservations can be made on the Theater website.
