Born This Way
13 May 2014More people are imprisoned each year for homosexuality in Cameroon than any other country in the world.
With intimate access to the lives of two young gay Cameroonians, Born This Way sketches a vivid portrait of day-to-day life in modern Africa. Lyrical imagery, devastating homophobia, glimpses of American culture and a hidden-camera courtroom drama coalesce into a story of what is possible in the global fight for equality.Born This Way will be screened on Thursday, May 15 at 7pm in Weitz Cinema. A discussion with the filmmaker will follow the screening.

Special Screening: The Girls in the Band
24 February 2014Described as “engaging, informative, thorough and brimming with delightful characters” by New York Times reviewer, Jeannette Catsoulis, The Girls in the Band is a documentary about the sexism in Jazz ensembles during the 1930s and 40s. Many women were excluded from all-male bands during this time, but they moved on to create their own all-female bands. The film follows the lives of female jazz players who worked during the 1930s and 40s and reveals their gripping stories.
The Girls in the Band will be screened on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:00 pm in the Weitz Cinema.

Stop Motion Animation Class Screening
3 February 2014The students in Britta Johnson’s Stop Motion Animation class have been learning and developing the skills of stop motion animation for the past five weeks. On February 6th, at 5:30pm, their projects will come to life in Weitz Cinema in a special screening. Come support the students and the CAMS department and enjoy these interesting projects.

Experimental Films in White Space 226
6 February 2013In the fall of 2012, Carleton hosted a visit by the legendary American experimental film maker Robert Beavers and Ute Aurand, a central figure in the Berlin avant-garde film world.
During their visit, they challenged Carleton students (and faculty!) to make their own two-minute experimental films. Over 30 intrepid film makers took up the gauntlet.
The results are on view in White Space 226 on the second floor of the Weitz Center.

Carleton to Present Celebrated Indian Filmmaker Anand Patwardhan and Rare Screening of his Documentary Film, ‘Jai Bhim Comrade’
5 October 2012Noted and celebrated Indian documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan will host a discussion and screening of his groundbreaking film, “Jai Bhim Comrade: The atrocity of caste, a tradition of reason, a song that will be sung,” at the Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. This rare appearance is one of only two screenings of the film in Minnesota. Patwardhan’s films document injustice in an attempt to spark dialogue and social change; “Jai Bhim Comrade” provides a harrowing look at the persistent suffering of the “untouchable” caste in Indian society despite attempts to end discrimination. This event, which is free and open to the public, begins with a discussion and reception with Patwardhan at 6 p.m., followed by the screening of the film at 7 p.m.

In collaboration with the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium, Carleton College is pleased to announce the first annual Northfield Summer Film Festival, running for four consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning July 10 and running through July 31. The theme of the series is “awakenings” and featured films include “Groundhog Day,” “After Life,” “The Crying Game,” and “Local Hero.” Screenings will be presented each Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema and are free and open to the public.
