Sneak peek of Laska Jimsen’s new short films
24 January 2015Assistant professor Laska Jimsen’s cinema repertoire ranges from nonfiction video documentaries to handmade 16mm film making. Her films are known for capturing the beauty of the natural world by paying special attention to the landscapes, people, animals, and plants of various regions of the United States. Some subjects included in her works include silent bow hunters in the snowy forests of Minnesota, an Oregon pioneer whose hobbies include coyote trapping and trombone playing, and the horses and riders of a humble stable in Philadelphia. Her wide array of films have been screened at a variety of festivals including Ann Arbor, Athens, IC Docs, and MadCat, as well as Los Angeles Filmforum and Walker Art Center.
On Monday, January 26, a few of her short films will be screened from 4:00pm-6:40pm in the Weitz Cinema. This screening will feature a special sneak peek at one of Jimsen’s currrent projects.

“Señorita Extravida” featured in International Film Forum
21 January 2015Since 1993, over 270 women from Juárez have been kidnapped and murdered by unknown perpetrators, leaving the families with little hope for legal action against the wrongdoers. “Señorita Extravida” is a documentary investigating these shocking disappearances and presenting the complexity of Mexico’s apparent lack of response to the crimes. Lourdes Portillo, director and producer of “Señorita Extravida”, is known for her unflinching use of victim testimony and visually poetic footage that has captivated global audiences and won her numerous international film awards. The International Film Forum proudly presents “Señorita Extravida” on Monday, January 26th, at 7:00pm in the Weitz Theater.

International Film Forum Schedule Released for Winter 2015
9 January 2015The International Film Forum (IFF) is a group dedicated appreciating and analyzing cinematic art from across the world. What began as a partnership between Carleton arts, cinema and media studies, and language departments has extended into the Northfield community as well. Members of the community are invited to attend screenings of international films that are introduced by Carleton professors or knowledgeable guests. Film screenings are often followed by a short discussion session that helps viewers obtain a deeper understanding of the artistic implications of the films. Screenings are held every Monday at 7:00pm in the Weitz Cinema. Screenings are free and open to the public.

Gould Library exhibits the weighty cartoons of Miguel Brieva
9 October 2014Miguel Brieva’s Welcome to the World exhibition of satirical cartoons on the 4th floor of Gould Library is a thought-provoking cocktail of cutting humor, social and existential meditations, and political commentary, complete with full, vibrant colors. Brieva, a Spanish artist and cartoonist, combines eye-catching imagery with pointed dialogue and descriptions in this darkly comical exhibit.

National Theatre Live beams in to Weitz Cinema

International Film Forum announces Fall line-up
11 September 2014Monday nights at the Weitz Cinema will again see a wide-ranging series of films from around the world, courtesy of the International Film Forum. Gearing up again on September 22, this term’s slate will also include colloquia with two featured artists, director Oscar Clemente (along with his documentary KEEP ON ROLLING screening October 6) and screenwriter Silvia Nanclares (in conjunction with MUY CERCA and LOS ILUSOS on November 3).

Northfield Summer Film Fest
24 June 2014The Cannon Valley Elder Collegium and Carleton College are again pleased to present the Northfield Film Festival. The first movie, Bonnie and Clyde, is on July 8. The others are The Graduate, July 15; 2001–A Space Odyssey, July 22; and Chinatown, July 29.
All evening screenings are free and open to the public.
If you’d like to learn more about the films, enroll in the CVEC’s class! Each movie will be followed the morning after by a seminar led by faculty experts, 9:30-11:30 AM, also at the Weitz Center. Registration for these seminars begins on June 15 by mail or at the Northfield Senior Center, and $25 covers all four movies. The first seminar will be led by Jay Beck, Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies, Carleton.

In collaboration with the Northfield Historical Society, Carleton is pleased to host screenings of the first annual Jesse James Film Festival.
