Entertainment Across the River
21 October 2014In a collaborative effort to expand audiences at Carleton College as well as St. Olaf, art-appreciators are encouraged to attend theater productions, concerts, and art exhibits provided by both of Northfield’s colleges. While waiting for Carleton performances to premiere, members of the Carleton community are welcome and encouraged to attend some of St. Olaf’s events. High Energy Jazz Performance Coming to Concert Hall
11 October 2014Minnesota-based saxophone quartet, JazzAx, is set to perform at the Concert Hall on Sunday, October 12 at 3:00pm. JazzAx is a group with roots in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area and has performed original jazz compositions at countless jazz conventions, schools, and performing arts centers. JazzAx’s talent has allowed the group to make a prominent name for itself in the upper Midwest area of the United States and inspired many music enthusiasts to attend JazzAx’s workshops, lessons, and jazz clinics at educational institutions.

Costume Designer Splashes Color onto Shakespeare Production
7 October 2014Mary Ann Kelling, Carleton’s head costume designer, is using her creative eye and unique patterns to transform the way we see Shakespearean costumes. Her costumes will be featured in the fall production of A Winter’s Tale, opening Thursday, October 30th, at 7:30pm.

Student-Curated Arts in the Weitz
22 April 2014Senior Studio Art and Chemistry double-major Soon Kai Poh curated a display of four Japanese prints to hang in the Weitz space as part of his campus work in the Carleton art collection. Soon Kai chose four prints that represent different genres, time periods, and approaches to printing within the Japanese woodblock tradition. “We have such a great collection that not very many people get the chance to see,” he said, explaining that he hoped to showcase Carleton’s sizable collection of Japanese prints in his selected works. Guest Artist: Shen Tili, Kunqu Opera
16 April 2014Experience the “Passing Through Time” in a work that combines Chinese traditional music with ancient Kunqu Opera. A talented young woman named Qiao Xiao-Qin reads the story of “The Peony Pavilion” on a cold, rainy night. Fantasizing about being in the story herself, she soon finds herself passing back through time and becoming the main character in the ancient story, Du Li-Niang. The April 26 performance features superstar Kunqu Opera actress Shen Yi-Li from Shanghai, accompanied by top professional performers of Chinese traditional instruments…

Chinese Music Ensemble Performance
10 February 2014On the very day the 2014 Winter Olympics were getting underway in Sochi, four members of the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble were awarded medals of their own at the 2014 Huain Cup International Chinese Instrument Competition at the Le Petit Trianon Theatre in sunny San Jose, California.
A panel comprised of elite musicians and music scholars from the P.R. China awarded a Gold Medal to Yawen Chen (Dizi – Chinese bamboo flute), a Silver Medal to Vivky Wu (Guzheng – Chinese zither), and Bronze Medals to Xiaodi Wang (Erhu – Chinese fiddle), and Ken Wang (Sanxian – Chinese banjo). This year marks the third time Carleton students have competed in this prestigious competition.
These medalists will be performing in the Concert Hall on March 2nd.
