Acclaimed nature writer Barry Lopez to speak October 2

25 September 2014

With the People’s Climate March on September 21 and the UN Climate Summit the following week, it’s clear that the environment is literally a hot topic in today’s world. Barry Lopez, whose writings about environmentalism have won him national recognition, will be speaking at Carleton on Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.  Lopez is this year’s Angus C. Wurtele Distinguished Visitor.

Lopez’s multi-award winning book, Of Wolves and Men (1978), was published at a time when few American writers were brave enough to delve into the complicated issues surrounding humanity’s relationship with the environment and its creatures. Due to the book’s honest discussion of the changing roles between wolves and increasingly industrialized civilizations, it has remained a landmark publication of its kind and symbolizes the dangers that all species face at the wake of land development.  Another one of Lopez’s most defining books, Arctic Dreams (1986), was awarded the National Book Award for Nonfiction the same year it was published. Arctic Dreams is an account of Lopez’s personal travels through the Arctic mixed with scientific facts about the harmful effects of human infringement on the natural world. The rest of Lopez’s distinguished body of work has collected scores of awards as well as acknowledgment in the New York Times Magazine and National Geographic.

Lopez will speak on “The Writer and Social Responsibility” at 7:30 p.m. on October 2 in Boliou Hall.  The talk is sponsored by Environmental Studies.
