SUMMARY:Reading *Trust* with Hernán Díaz
TRANSP:TRANSPARENT
LOCATION:TBD
DESCRIPTION:<p style="font-weight: 400"><a href="https://www.hernandiaz.ne

American fiction\, will visit Carleton on November 4–5 as the special g
uest of the Light Lectureship.</p>\n<p style="font-weight: 400">In anticip
ation of his visit\, we invite faculty and staff to join a reading group d
evoted to his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel <a href="https://www.hernandiaz
.net/trust-novel"><em>Trust</em></a>\, culminating in a conversation with
 Diaz himself.</p>\n<p style="font-weight: 400">Díaz’s first novel\, <e
m>In the Distance</em>\, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize\; his secon
d\, <em>Trust</em>\, won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.</p>\n<p sty
le="font-weight: 400">Across these two remarkably different novels\, Díaz
returns to some of the foundational myths of American culture — the fro
 ntier\, the self-made individual\, money\, power\, and the creation of eno
rmous wealth — while radically reinventing the literary forms through wh
ich those myths have traditionally been told. <em>In the Distance</em> re
imagines the western from the perspective of a lost immigrant moving again
st the great westward migration\; <em>Trust</em> takes apart the novel o
f wealth and finance by telling the same story through four competing narr
atives. In both\, Diaz inhabits recognizable American genres only to estra
nge them from within\, asking who gets to tell the stories through which A
 merica imagines itself.</p>\n<p style="font-weight: 400">The reading group
will meet once to discuss <em>Trust </em>(date/time TBD). On November 4\
, Díaz will give a talk about his fiction and how he situates his work wi
thin American literature. On November 5\, members of the group will have t
he opportunity to discuss <em>Trust</em> with Díaz himself — a rare ch
ance to continue our reading in conversation with the author.</p>\n<p styl
e="font-weight: 400">The reading group is sponsored by the Department of S
panish in collaboration with the Humanities Center. Copies of <em>Trust</e

. If you would like to participate and receive a copy of the novel\, pleas
