Lucas Lecture Series - Video Installation - Durmiente + async

Mon, April 10, 2023 - Thu, April 27, 2023 • Weitz Center for Creativity - Hamlin Creative Space

Durmiente is a satellite video from Apichatpong feature films, Memoria. It features an intimate scene which does not appear in the final film, the moment when the lead character (Tilda Swinton) falls asleep, signifying of the end of her journey in Colombia. Durmiente is created to accompany async - first light (2017), as an homage to an act of crossing borders.

async - first light is a collaboration between Apichatpong and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, with combined tracks from his
album “async”. The natural and artificial lights bloom in various settings, at the artist’s home and abroad. Apichatpong also sent small cameras to friends and asked them to shoot themselves, loved ones, sleeping. Represents a journey and a yearn for inter-connectedness through light, cinema, and dreams.

Both films lead us from daylight into night, wakefulness to dreaming. The periphery of fact and fiction disintegrates.
