My artworks — a triptych of oil paintings and a set of sketches — are an exploration of identity in connection with exterior and interior spaces. They wrestle with the realization that home is temporary. They reflect on the connection between memory and place as we are momentarily fused with the spaces we encounter.

The paintings embody a looser style with a dreamlike quality, feeling of movement, and naturalistic emphasis on activities of everyday life inspired by muralist Diego Rivera, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, and painter Larry Rivers. They contemplate my family’s longtime roots in Minnesota, our ties to Carleton and Northfield, and a move to the Pacific Northwest that coincides with my graduation. They consider intimacy of place and adjusting to movement as universal experiences.

I am hopeful they might speak to Carleton students experiencing parallel processes of transition.
