Tyrone Quigley
Studio Art Major
I work from observation and imagination to deepen my connection to the world. Like a conversation aims for shared understanding, in drawing I work to understand my subject. Moreover, all the portraits shown here began as drawings from life and so they stem from hours shared with another person. When I return to the studio to create paintings from drawings, I linger in my memory of these moments. Coming out of this observational practice, my prints explore how memory and imagination can be a form of reflection that brings us closer to the world around us.
My choice of media also comes from a desire for connection. A copper plate resists my needle, pulling it in a direction that evokes the scraggle of pine. A figure comes to life by letting a watercolor wash flow. Media like watercolor and dry point don’t allow themselves to be controlled, instead I work with them and learn from them.
