I’m fascinated by the disparity between perception and reality amidst an environment that is in constant flux. The night sky and the light of the stars that’s captured by our eyes are all histories. Outer layers of bark on a tree are dead cells that protect the new growth underneath.
I’m drawn to the tension that lies between paradoxes.
The relationship constructed between humans and nature consists of not only firm separations, but also inevitable intersections. A butterfly’s cocoon symbolizes rebirth and metamorphosis, while a similar form found in nature is a spider’s silken-wrapped prey. Milkweed pods are vessels for seeds, which marks both the beginning and end of a plant’s life cycle. Through close observation and reverence of nature, I’ve created pieces that use repetition of form and mark-making to emphasize time, change, and smaller parts making up the whole. In my artist practice I am learning to embrace ambiguity and impermanence.
