This piece, tentatively titled “Course of an Empire,” has been a project months in the making. At first, it began as a study in chaos and order. I was challenging myself to create something random and natural looking while also using a rigid system and structure for building those forms. However, as time progressed, I found that my piece had taken on a life of its own.

The structures that formed no longer did so because I wanted them to, but because they had to. At this point, I started documenting the progress of the piece with photos. As I continued adding to and changing the piece, I began to do so with the ideas of impermanence and entropy in mind.

From the beginning, I had known that what I was building would have to be dismantled eventually, because it was impossible to move. Taking it down became as much of the project as putting it together. However, the “death” of my work was not so easy to convey. Eventually, I decided the best way to depict the growth and inevitable destruction of it was through a documentary/time lapse video — it not only shows the overall changing of the piece, but also gives a sense of how the entire project became fully formed.
