A number of students choose to intern for a summer or, occasionally, during winter break or a term at a museum, preservation agency, architectural firm, or similar institution. The Career Center website offers up-to-date information on internships. For a comprehensive list of opportunities, check out Handshake, Carleton’s job & internship site. You can also see where former Art & Art History majors have interned by visiting the Summer Internship Experiences database.
Student Fellowships offers resources to support student research and artistic projects. The Office of the Provost offers a Senior Year Comps Fellowship to assist in research over Winter Break. Studio and Art History faculty members may also have information available and some internships are posted on Art Department bulletin boards.
Whether paid or unpaid, these offer both valuable experience and insight into possible career paths. Our students have interned in a range of institutions and businesses from New York and Twin Cities photography studios to museums across the country.
In addition, each year the department hires a Studio Art senior or recent graduate to work as a part-time “Fifth-Year” educational assistant during the following academic year. They maintain access to the Boliou facilities and assist faculty members with various projects, including organizing and mounting exhibitions in the Boliou Gallery. They also organize an annual special exhibition in that space. Faculty members offer help and guidance for the fifth-year educational assistants’ own art work.
