Professor Hyslop came to Carleton from Edinburgh in the 1920s and was Carleton’s first full-time art teacher, becoming chairman of the department twelve years later. He received a degree in art from the University of Edinburgh and the highest academic degree—Associate, given in the field of art at Royal College of Art, London. He retired in 1963.

The Alfred Hyslop Scholarship Fund was created as a surprise for the retired professor of art when he returned to Carleton for the College’s 100th anniversary commencement in 1967, and additional endowment funds were added as a memorial for retired art professor Warnholtz later in 1994.

W. Dean Warnholtz earned his BA and MFA degrees at the State University of Iowa. He came to Carleton in 1949 and remained a popular member of the faculty for 33 years. Professor Warnholtz was also a distinguished painter and printmaker, earning many awards for his work.
