Marc Simpson to present on Winslow Homer and the Civil War

3 February 2014

Marc Simpson, Associate Director of Graduate Studies in Art History at Williams College will present a talk on February 4, 5pm Boliou 104 exploring the early career of Winslow Homer, whose first paintings showed the Civil War and its effects on the field, in the camps, and on the home front.  Particular focus will be on revelatory depictions of African Americans.  Taken in tandem with their carefully chosen titles, these pictures range in tone from the comic to the tragic and earned for him the epithet of being “the best chronicler of the war.”  This lecture is funded by the Edwin L.
