Erika Ohles: Fellowship to China

3 June 2013

Erika Ohles ’13 traveled to Jingdezhen, China last summer to study ceramics and Chinese culture. Erika spent her time drawing and sketching ceramic forms at the ancient Ming Dynasty kiln site, as well as ceramic workshops, and outdoor markets, enhancing her skills as a draftsperson. In places where drawing was not allowed Erika photographed ceramic work.

Living in the city in a hotel, Erika immersed herself in Chinese language and culture. She ate meals with the family of a ceramic artist in Jindgezhen. Knowing locals was a wonderful resource; the helped her check into a hotel and find places of interest in the city. The trip really helped strengthen her Chinese language skills and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.

Erika had invaluable help from the ceramics professor Kelly Connole, who helped her develop her idea into a full-fledged proposal.
