Empty Bowls 2007
More than 400 bowls, 20 pots of soup, and a group of dedicated students.
On April 27th these three components, along with the generous Carleton Community, came together on the Bald Spot to raise $5120 for the Northfield Community Action Food Shelf. Working collaboratively on each bowl, Professor Kelly Connole’s Advanced Ceramics students learned about ceramic history, the benefits and challenges of collective work, and generosity.
The Empty Bowls Project, now a part of many ceramics studios internationally, was the 1990 brainchild of a Michigan high school art teacher who created the program as a means of raising money to support a food drive.
At Carleton, the project features soup made by interest houses on campus, served in one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls made by Carleton art students. For a suggested donation of $10 to $15 per bowl, participants are able to purchase a bowl of soup and then keep their hand-made bowl.
